Measure your bed’s mattress space and check the exact dimensions in both the frame and mattress listings. Size names can differ between manufacturers and countries.
Common Australian sizes include Queen at approximately 153cm by 203cm and King at approximately 183cm by 203cm. Use these as a starting point, then confirm the measurements for the specific products.
Check mattress thickness as well as width and length. Add that thickness to the height of the support surface to estimate your finished sleeping height. Consider getting into bed, the position of bedside tables and whether your fitted sheets will fit.
Think about what you like and dislike about your current mattress: the surface feel, ease of turning, room to move and comfort when sharing. These observations are more useful than choosing solely from a label.
Descriptions such as plush, medium and firm are not a universal scale across brands. Your experience can also depend on your body, sleeping position and the base beneath the mattress.

If motion transfer, temperature or material sensitivities matter to you, look for specific information for that model. Do not assume every foam mattress sleeps the same way or that a cooling label guarantees a particular overnight temperature.
Follow the mattress manufacturer’s requirements for base construction, slat spacing and centre support. Check any stated capacity and how it is defined for both the mattress and frame.
An adjustable base needs a mattress expressly suitable for that use. Do not assume a mattress will bend safely simply because it contains foam.
For bunk beds, check the bed manufacturer’s permitted mattress dimensions and maximum thickness, along with all guardrail and safety instructions. This guide concerns general bed mattresses, not cot or infant sleep products.
Check the packaged dimensions and weight against doorways, stairs and your ability to move the carton. Arrange suitable help when required.
If the mattress arrives compressed, follow its own unpacking instructions, including any time limit for opening the package and the recommended expansion period. These times vary; do not rely on a general rule.
Read the care instructions before choosing a protector or cleaning method. Check whether rotation is recommended and whether the design permits flipping. Confirm the stated warranty and return terms; do not assume a sleep trial or change-of-mind return after use is included.
