A vanity mirror should give you a useful view at the distance where you get ready. The best fit for your space depends on the mirror’s dimensions, its position and the lighting already in the room.
This vanity mirror buying guide explains what to check when comparing our vanity mirrors. Features such as dimming, magnification and Bluetooth are model-specific.
Check the overall dimensions, including the frame, lights and stand. The reflective area may be smaller than the advertised overall size.
For a tabletop mirror, compare the base depth with the usable depth of your dressing table. Leave room for the items you use and make sure the base can sit fully supported.
Think about your eye level when seated or standing. If the mirror tilts or rotates, allow space for that movement and check that the view works from your normal position.
Read whether the lights have adjustable brightness, different colour settings or a single fixed mode. A bulb-framed design and an illuminated strip can produce different visual effects.
Consider the room as well as the mirror. A window or overhead fitting may create reflections or shadows, so plan the position before choosing the largest model that fits.
Do not assume every LED mirror provides daylight-accurate colour. If colour rendering or a particular colour temperature matters to you, look for a stated specification rather than relying on promotional photographs.
A standard mirror gives a different view from a magnifying panel. If a model includes magnification, check the stated level and which part of the mirror provides it.
Magnifying mirrors can require a closer viewing position. Consider whether you can use that position comfortably with the depth of your table and the seat you have chosen.
A tri-fold shape does not automatically mean all panels are magnified. Check the product details, hinge movement and folded dimensions if you intend to put the mirror away.
Check whether the model uses mains power, USB input, replaceable batteries or a rechargeable battery. These are different arrangements, and a USB-powered mirror is not necessarily rechargeable.
Confirm what comes in the box, including the stand, cable, adaptor and mounting parts where applicable. Do not assume a USB connection can charge your phone; it may only power the mirror itself.
For Bluetooth speakers or other extras, read the stated functions and controls. Choose features you will use rather than assuming every mirror in a similar-looking range has the same equipment.
Use the mirror only in a location permitted by its instructions. A bedroom vanity mirror is not automatically suitable for a bathroom or a position exposed to splashes and steam.
For wall mounting, confirm the mirror supports that installation method and use appropriate supports for its weight and your wall. Do not rely on a tabletop stand as a wall bracket.
Keep electrical connections away from water and follow all supplied instructions. Have any required hardwired electrical installation carried out by a licensed electrician. Route cables clear of drawers, hinges and walkways.
